Field Walk...
It's hard to believe that this is our twentieth week of distribution. Twenty weeks of Tuesday and Friday harvest days; twenty weeks of deciding what produce is ready to harvest, where it is in the field and how much I can give out; of loading buckets and barrels onto the back of the truck at 6:30 in the morning; of counting out rubber bands for bunching; of sharpening harvest knives; of bent backs and strong backs; of washing and counting produce; of putting them in green stackable crates; twenty weeks of in and out of the cooler. These are our harvest mornings in a nutshell. And the amazing thing is we still have seven weeks left to go!! Our CSA has one of the longest seasons with twenty-seven weeks when most CSA's are typically 20-22 weeks. Many of my farm friends taunt me this time of year when they say, "Oh, we just have three more weeks."
I am antsy for a winter break but there are a few things left to do before I hibernate: continue to put the ground into a cover crop; take down tomato trellises; plant and mulch garlic;
turn the compost pile; clean and sharpen the tools. We've come along way in this marathon-long season. Just the last 6.2 miles to go.
Eat Well, Farmer Amy
