VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: 6/16/07 and July
Farmer Kris tells us that the most crucial time for help in the fields is NOW - through the end of July. The work you do in our fields helps to feed us all, and it's fun too. So why not plan to attend the next work day on Saturday June 16th from 8 AM until noon.

If you can help at a different time that's ok too. Call Kris at 618-467-2104 and leave a message including your name, phone number, and the day and time you want to work.

The Greeter schedule has been filling up well with only an hour or two remaining open this month. . . but July is coming up quickly and is still wide open. Please sign up in the distribution room for your opportunity to meet and greet other shareholders. Remember, the duties are posted, and the most important job is to welcome everyone with a friendly smile. Many thanks to Carol Admire for making the reminder calls!

GARDEN BEAUTIFICATION: 6/16/07
The next meeting for the Garden Beautification Committee will be June 16th at 1:30 pm. Anyone interested in providing ideas to "pretty up" our garden please plan to attend. If you cannot make the meeting but would like to participate, please contact Robyne O'Mara at robyne@charter.net

COOKING DEMONSTRATION: 6/22/07
The Education Committee is sponsoring a cooking demonstration! Chef Lori will be using produce from the weekly share to demonstrate a dish we can make ourselves. This is the first in a series of cooking demonstrations that will be held on alternating distribution days. Come see what's cooking in this casual environment.

When - Friday June 22nd 4:30-6 PM
Where - the Distribution Barn
By - Chef Lori Bregenzer, a La Vista Garden shareholder

SUMMER SOLSTICE: 6/22/07
Don't you just love the early mornings and spacious evenings of Summer? This fruitful season begins with the longest day of the year on the Solstice. Please join us the evening AFTER the solstice for a refreshing time outdoors and for a wonderful taste of the season. We will meet on Friday, June 22, at 7:00 PM at the garden near the white barn and greenhouse. The celebration includes poetry, ponderings, procession, and the opportunity to honor this season of the year. Bring a summertime dessert to share.

Cost: Optional donation

Registration: Appreciated, but not required. Call the Ecological Learning Center at 618-466-5004 and leave your name and the number of guests.

JULY SHAREHOLDER GATHERING: 7/8/07
The next Shareholder Gathering will be on Sunday, July 8, 2007 from 5-7 PM. Farmer Kris will be talking about composting at this gathering. July is red, white and blue month. Try to bring finger foods for sharing that have this theme. Don't forget your own reusable plates, napkins, glasses, and silverware. Drinks will be provided.

Field Work Day - Saturday 5/19/07
Join us Saturday, May 19, at 9 AM for a volunteer field work day. Likely tasks include planting sweet potatoes, eggplant, peppers, and possible weeding. We've had some very enjoyable and successful work days this spring, so come out and join in the fun. Bring a hat, water, and sunscreen. Rain will cancel. Call the farm office at 467-2104 for updates and more information.

Shares Still Available
We have shares that we want to sell out of as soon as possible! You will be WOWed each week as the season progresses with the beauty, wonder and tastes of your share of vegetables, herbs and flowers. Imagine who among your friends, co-workers, neighbors would enjoy the same experience!! You are the best folks to help get others signed up.......please assist us with this so these potential shareholders can get in on the season at it's earliest stages. They can download an application form on the Garden's website at www.lavistaCSA.org

Greeter Training - 5/18/07 and 5/22/07
One of the most enjoyable volunteer opportunities at the Garden is being a Greeter in the distribution area during weekly pick-up times. If you are planning to volunteer in this capacity, please plan to attend one of the training sessions. These sessions will provide orientation to Greeter duties and a chance to ask questions. Those who have worked previously as a Greeter are encouraged to attend to share experiences and offer suggestions. Two training dates are scheduled for your convenience.

Friday, May 18th, 6 PM - 7 PM
Tuesday, May 22nd, 6 PM - 7 PM

Location - the Barn

Garden Beautification Meeting - 5/20/07
If you're interested in doing volunteer work with the Garden Beautification committee, please attend the first planning meeting on Sunday, 5/20/07 at 4 PM. We'll meet at the barn and then walk the grounds to identify areas for beautification. Be sure to wear appropriate shoes.

ELC Discussion Course starts in June
The La Vista Ecological Learning Center (ELC) (located on the same property as the Community Supported Garden) is offering a NEW 4-week discussion course called "Global Warming: Changing CO2urse". The 4 sessions are in June and you can choose to attend EITHER Monday morning OR Tuesday evenings. This is a new, excellent series from the Northwest Earth Institute and would be a great way to get a handle on this huge sign of our times. The first of the four sessions begins the morning (10:30) of June 4 or the evening (7:00) of June 5.

Please see our flyers in the distribution room or give Fr. Maurice or Sr. Maxine a call at 618-466-5004 to learn more or to register. The Learning Center's website is www.lavistaELC.org

April 30, 2007

Greetings Shareholders,

We are asking every current shareholder to please recruit one new shareholder so that we can be "full" in time for the beginning of our Garden season on May 15. This is important so that we are fiscally responsible and can have a strong Garden community. Thanks for recruiting a friend or co-worker to become a new shareholder!

OPEN HOUSE COMING UP!
Please tell a friend about the Garden's Open Greenhouse on Sunday, May 6th from 2-4! Better yet, why don't you accompany them out to La Vista that afternoon?! We see this as the best way to let others know about the great thing we have going on here: personal testimony and accompaniment here on site. This is a beautiful place and we are happy to share it with the public on this day. There will be some old-time Bluegrass music featured from 2-4 which should be FUN!

GARDEN'S 5th SEASON ALMOST HERE!
Plan on attending the Shareholder Gathering just after the Open House on that same Sunday, May 6th from 4-6. This will be an important meeting and the new shareholder handbooks will be distributed. With the season beginning the following week, it is important that we all start on the same page. Please bring a snack to share as well as a folding chair. Prospective members are most welcome.

VOLUNTEER FIELD DAY
The next farm volunteer field day is Saturday, May 5, at 9 a.m. Join in the fun at the farm by giving an hour or three in the fields, helping with planting and weeding. Every extra bit of help you can offer goes a long way towards keeping the farm in great shape. Call the farm office at 467-2104 for more information or updates. Wear appropriate clothing and bring a water bottle. Rain will cancel.

EXTRA PLANTS AVAILABLE
There are occasions when the farm has extra plants available after big plant-outs. If you are interested in taking some of these extra plants home, please call the farm office at 467-2104. We currently have some herbs and cherry tomato plants available.

GREETER TRAINING
One of the most enjoyable volunteer opportunities at the Garden is being a Greeter in the distribution area during weekly pick-up times. If you are planning to volunteer in this capacity, please plan to attend one of the training sessions. These sessions will provide orientation to Greeter duties and a chance to ask questions. Those who have worked previously as a Greeter are encouraged to attend to share experiences and offer suggestions. Two training dates scheduled for your convenience.

Friday, May 18th, 6pm - 7pm
Tuesday, May 22nd, 6pm - 7pm
Location - the Barn

GREETER SIGN-UP SHEETS
Farmer Kris will be doing Greeter duty for the first two weeks of the season. However, he would appreciate having a volunteer with him as well. If you are available to work with him over the first two weeks please call the farm office at 618-467-2104 to let Kris know when you are available. The Greeter sign up sheets will be posted in the barn at the May 6th shareholder Gathering. You can also sign up then.

Greeter hours are as follows
Tuesdays - noon till 7pm
Fridays - 2pm till 7pm

Sign up for an hour or for as many hours as you wish.

April 16, 2007

Greetings,

Many of you heard about area farmers suffering lots of damage from the near-record freeze of Easter weekend. Fortunately, the damage at La Vista was minimal! Our soil holds onto moisture a bit longer than most soils, which precluded many of our plantings and sowings from taking place. When the Big Freeze came, most of our sensitive transplants were safe in the greenhouse. Strawberries were still at high risk, though. The summer-like conditions of March made them flower and become extremely vulnerable to frost. However, Farmer Kris was able to cover most of the patch heavily with row cover and straw. They appear to have survived just fine! In the week since the freeze, we've planted over 7,000 plants with lots of help. The cold, cloudy, wet weather isn't making plants want to grow much, but our fields are filling up nonetheless. The fields are alive, well, wet, and kicking!

Farm Work Day - Saturday, April 21st
Join us at the farm Saturday morning, April 21, at 9 a.m. for a morning of planting. With the heavy spring rains and cold temperatures, our planting opportunities have been limited, so we need help getting in lots of crops all at once. Please call the farm office at 467-2104 for more information or schedule changes. In the case of inclement weather, call the office the morning of the event for updated information. Dress appropriately and bring water. All are welcome!

Open Green House - Sunday, May 6th, 2pm-4pm
Please tell a friend about the Garden's Open Greenhouse on Sunday, May 6th from 2PM-4PM! Better yet, why don't you accompany them out to La Vista that afternoon?!
