FIRST DISTRIBUTION
By the time you read this, most everyone will have had their first distribution day…and some may have picked up twice. I'm sure you'll all agree with me that freshly picked strawberries are the BEST! I've enjoyed them on my morning cereal all week long. And I finally found a recipe for kale that didn't end up with a call to Domino's. I'm determined to learn to prepare Good Tasting Greens this season! I talked with Shareholder Christina Agyropoulos at the garden and she told me she'd eaten her last piece of chocolate (for the season at least) ….and that it was time to eat healthy food. She's right! Let the good eating begin!

NOW HIRING: GARDEN WORKER
Farmer Kris has 2 openings for part-time garden workers. If you or someone you know is looking for an outdoor job this summer, talk with Kris. The office number is 618-467-2104.

SATURDAY WORK DAY - 5/26/06
Another great opportunity to get your hands in the dirt THIS Saturday from 9AM – Noon. Supervised children are always welcome!

ALTERNATE SHAREHOLDER REMINDER
Alternate Shareholders pick up EVERY OTHER WEEK, on their assigned week and day.

Tuesday distribution is between 12 noon – 7PM

Friday distribution is between 2PM – 7PM

Be sure to coordinate with your partner to be sure that you are picking up your allotment on the correct day, and that you figure out how you'll divide the produce when there are 5 eggplants or 1 watermelon. Feel free to post a note for your partner on the community bulletin board to communicate which "half" of the produce you took.

SHARES STILL AVAILABLE
There are still shares available. If you want to "upgrade" to a FULL share, now is the time to act. Also, you are welcome to bring a friend to the garden when you pick up your share. Our best advertisement is word of mouth…by YOU! Contact Kris at 618-467-2104 or reply to this email for more information.

ECOLOGICAL DISCUSSION SERIES
Nourish your whole self this Summer! Register for one of two new Discussion series which begin Tuesday June 13: Discovering a New Sense of Place and Deep Ecology. These are sponsored by the La Vista Ecological Learning Center (located on the same grounds as the Community Supported Garden). More information and registration forms will be sent out soon.

¨ Early Spring Greens A Success!

The pilot Spring Greens program was a huge success! Thirty shareholders were provided with two pounds of fresh greens every other week over six weeks, with the last distribution in early May. The "early greens" were sold for an additional $30 for this pilot program. Farmer Kris grew everything in the greenhouse, and the leafy rows of spinach, arugula, mache, frisee and other interesting-named edible leaves filled three quarters of the building. The tasters' responses were favorable and the greens bountiful, so watch for early greens in 2007!

¨ Produce Distribution Begins

The Regular 2006 Season officially begins next week with the first distribution on Tuesday 5/16. The Distribution Schedule has been created and was passed out with new Shareholder manuals at the Shareholder Gathering this past Sunday. (For those who weren't at the Gathering, the schedule will be emailed in the next couple of days.)

FULL Shareholders will pick up EACH WEEK, on their assigned distribution day, either Tuesday between 12 – 7 PM or Friday between 2 – 7 PM.

ALTERNATE Shareholders will pick up EVERY OTHER WEEK, on their assigned week and day. "Week 1" Shareholders will begin pickup either Tuesday 5/16 or Friday 5/19. "Week 2" Shareholders will have their first pickup on 5/23 or 5/26.

As a reminder to all who "share a Share". . . please coordinate with your partner to be sure that you are picking up your allotment on the correct day and that you figure out how you'll divide the produce when there are 3 heads of lettuce or 1 cantaloupe.

¨ Saturday Work Day - 5/13/06

Great opportunity to get your hands in the dirt THIS Saturday from 9AM – Noon. I hear that you'll be planting my eggplant parmesan – YUM!

¨ Shareholder Gathering and Hybrid Car Display

If you missed the Shareholder Gathering this past Sunday, perhaps saw the front page of The Telegraph on Monday and read about the hybrid cars that were on display at the garden. (You can read the article here: http://www.lavistacsa.org/In_The_Press/Motorists_revved/motorists_revved.html ) The beautiful day, hybrid technology and anticipation of fresh produce brought over 75 folks out to the Garden! Several people toured the garden for the first time and a half dozen signed up for shares on the spot!

¨ Shares Still Available

We really need to sell all the shares to meet our financial commitments without depending on the Oblates. Help us sell the last remaining shares by spreading the word about fresh produce available with purchase of a Full or Alternate Share. You are welcome to show off the garden by bringing a friend when you pick up your share.

¨ Web Site Statistics

Did you know that in one week, the garden website (http://www.lavistacsa.org) was visited by 919 different folks who looked at a total of 2,320 pages? They came from as far away as Germany, Norway, Canada, Mexico, Poland, Jap, Australia and Russia. There were 72 downloads of the Agreement pdf file, 60 folks looked at the Calendar, 59 at the Learning Center and 51 at the Newsletter page. Historically the Newsletter page will be the overwhelming favorite as soon as we start new publications. Don't forget that you can find out what will be in your share and read the rest of the week's Newsletter on the site at: http://www.lavistacsa.org/Newsletter/newsletter.html. It should be posted by Sunday each week.

GARDEN NEWS

Dear Shareholders of the Community Supported Garden at La Vista,

Greetings on this first day of May! I write with excitement and with a request: May signals the month we have all been waiting for as our fourth season kicks off! I look forward to gathering with you this Sunday, May 7 at 4:00 near the barn as we meet to get acquainted, become updated, receive handbooks, and enjoy each other's company. Do bring a chair and a snack to share during the break at 5:00. The gathering will conclude by 6:00.

As we approach the beginning of the season, we see that our shareholder numbers are not totally full. It is vitally important that these be filled before the season begins! We need to meet our goal of 140 shares, so our farmer can be paid the salary and benefits promised and to have enough funding for seeds, diesel, tools, etc. It would be unfavorable at this time to resort to seeking funding from the Oblates (who helped us begin four years ago).

Therefore, in the name of the Garden's Core Group and committees that have been working very diligently, I ask you to help the "community" you are part of by each recruiting one new shareholder. It would be excellent if you could invite her/him/them to the Garden this Sunday, May 7. We've arranged to exhibit several alternative energy vehicles (flyer attached) at the "Open greenHouse" that begins at 2:00 and our Shareholder Gathering starts at 4:00. People are naturally interested in joining the garden when they see it for themselves . . . and it is a lovely, nourishing sight these days!

If you are a new shareholder-welcome! If you are returning-welcome back! And if you are a past member who hasn't re-joined, we invite you to come out to the Garden on Sunday to see all that's happening this season!

See you Sunday and hope you can bring a friend!

Sincerely,
Fr. Maurice Lange, OMI
Director, Oblate Ecological Initiative
